Gum disease is a dental issue you should take very seriously. It has two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. The symptoms involved in this disease include red, swollen and tender gums that bleed easily. As the disease progresses, additional symptoms occur, like receded gums, the formation of gum pockets, loose teeth and even lost teeth. To help you know a little more about gum disease, our dentists, Dr. Sid Tucker and Dr. Raphael Csillag, are happy to tell you all about the causes and treatments involved:

Causes

The major cause of gum disease is plaque, which is a white, sticky film that sticks to the teeth and gumline. If you fail to remove the plaque daily, it starts to build up and irritate the gums. As time passes, the plaque turns into tartar, which is a very toxic substance. The tartar makes the gums recede from the teeth, infects the pockets and then spreads to the jawbone. There, it deteriorates the bone to cause loose and lost teeth.

Treatments

The treatments available depend on the stage of the disease. For the first stage (gingivitis), a professional dental cleaning should do the trick. For the second stage (periodontitis), scaling and root planing, laser therapy, gum grafts, bone grafts and other restorative treatments will likely be necessary.
